The First Skill of a Detective: Observation
Most people look.
Detectives observe.
Observation is the ability to notice details, changes, patterns, and inconsistencies that other people overlook.
It isn't about having extraordinary eyesight. It's about paying attention deliberately.
What to Practice
Start by entering an unfamiliar room and spending 30 seconds observing it.
Then leave and write down everything you remember.
Try to notice:
- Objects and their positions
- Changes in the environment
- People's behavior
- Unusual details
- Patterns and inconsistencies
The goal isn't to remember everything.
The goal is to become more aware of what you're actually seeing.
The EyeQ Principle
You cannot reason from evidence you never noticed.
Observation comes before deduction.
